Looking to breathe a little life into your home? Rather than embarking on a full-out remodelling project, a fresh coat of paint in a room or two could do the trick.
Whether you’re looking to brighten up your kitchen, create an airy feel in your living room, or something else, painting is an ideal and cost-effective way to get the results that you want.
Plus, there are some interesting trends out there that can help you create truly unique spaces within your home. Here are a few of the painting trends that you’ll definitely want to consider.
In the past, creating an accent wall was all about adding a pop of bright colour. However, today’s trend is actually the reverse. By painting an accent wall a darker colour than the rest of the room, you’re able to make a dramatic statement without going too dark.
How dark can you go?
Really, the sky’s the limit. However, our recommendation would be not to go any darker than charcoal grey. Also, we’d recommend being pretty conservative if you’re planning to put your home on the market soon.
Yellow is no stranger to the home paint palette. Many homes use bright sunshine yellow to add life and light to spaces like the kitchen or around a breakfast bar. It can also be a great colour to add to a kid’s bedroom as it’s light and lively.
However, you can go a little darker with the yellow to make a unique statement. Mustard yellow is an ideal option for smaller areas, such as narrow accent points, where it’s concentrated colour will really pop but not become overwhelming.
Pantone announced their colour of the year, and it’s a throwback to the days of Art Deco – coral. Combining orange and pink, coral is an excellent option for those who live in coastal areas, or those who want to add a bold touch of colour to their homes. With that being said, coral is not the best idea for the entire room.
Again, go with a single wall, or find a way to use it as an accent. It’s very versatile, and a little bit will go a long way.
Grey started to become popular in late 2017 and into 2018, but it’s still growing in appeal.
Light grey is an excellent alternative for wall colours to traditional white and it can help create a cooler but still neutral space that works well with a wide range of other colours. Light grey walls with white baseboards and crown moulding can make an elegant but light statement, for instance.
Pair this with the trend toward painted kitchen cabinets to create a unique look in your home.
Finally, you should understand the trend toward painted trim. In the past, interior trim usually matched the wall colour – white baseboards on white walls, for instance.
However, today’s trend is to make the trim stand out and to carry that statement throughout the entire home.
For instance, a light blue could add an airy feel, while grey would be a little more calming. You can even tie the trim colour into the room’s furnishings, such as pairing grey trim with a grey carpet to add visual appeal and tie the entire room together.
There you have them – five of the painting trends dominating the industry this year, and that you’ll really want to try yourself. Not sure you have the time or talent to pull it off? Want a bit more inspiration?
