Stunning Beauty and Durability
Epoxy products are used for water resistance, chemical resistance and to withstand high traffic. Epoxy coatings provide a distinct advantage over enamel and paint products and reflect their high performance in the cost of the product and application.
Options Available
Epoxy coatings are generally two component products made with a resin base and a hardener (catalyst). There are single component epoxies such as PPG Pitt Glaze which is a pre-catalyzed waterborne acrylic epoxy.
Areas for Application
Elite Trade painting applies epoxy products for floors in commercial and residential applications. Residential applications are garage floors, basement floors, cement deck areas and steps.
Preparation Steps
The application of epoxy products requires a stable surface free from grease and chemical contaminants. Cleaning, degreasing, and etching with acid and when needed grinding or shot blasting are required prior to application. The odour during the application process will be quite strong and will require precautions. Insuring air flow with ventilation units and the use of respirators is required.
Previous paint coatings must be removed
The application of epoxies over old paint is generally not possible. The epoxy coatings can react with previous paint coatings that will cause failure. This will mean the removal of the previous paint coating through grinding, stripping or shot blasting.
Garage Floors
The most popular application of epoxy for residential use is garage floors.

The average homeowner will only have use for epoxy on their garage floor. A solvent-based two-part epoxy is the best for this use.
An epoxy floor longevity is based on the type of usage and how often this usage occurs. A lightly used area will remain looking fresh for up to 10 years or more. Heavily used areas, such as garage bays used for mechanical work, will require a recoat approximately every 4 to 6 years.
Clients can walk on epoxy floors after 16 to 24 hours, place heavier items on them after 48 hours, and vehicle traffic can occur after a minimum of 72 hours. Increasing the time before vehicles are allowed on the surface will ensure longevity; ideally, 14 to 21 days will allow for a full cure. All these times can vary by temperature, with higher heats achieving quicker drying and cure times.
