Epoxy Coatings: Applications for Edmonton Clients

epoxy coatings

Seeking a durable solution for flooring, counters and other surfaces where permeability is an issue? Epoxy coatings may be the answer. Edmonton area businesses and even homeowners have benefited from using epoxy in a very wide range of applications.

What Do Epoxy Coatings Do?

Epoxy coatings are used in many different situations, and can offer a very wide range of aesthetics. However, they deliver the same benefits in all situations, which include:

Waterproof

Epoxy coatings are waterproof, making them excellent options for damp environments, or areas where spills may occur.

Resistant

Epoxy coatings are resistant to chemicals and stains, making them the go-to solution for many commercial and industrial settings.

Durable

Epoxy coatings hold up very well under even high foot traffic and vehicle traffic, making them good choices for warehouses and automotive shops.

How Are Epoxy Coatings Applied?

At Elite Trade Painting, we use two-component epoxy products. The first component is the base material. The second is a catalyst. When the two are mixed together, it creates a chemical reaction that hardens the epoxy into an impermeable coating. We recommend a two-component epoxy over single-component epoxies (the catalyst is combined with the base) because of the greater durability and performance offered. However, in environmentally sensitive situations, we may recommend a single component product, or even an acrylic epoxy.

Why Choose Concrete Floor Epoxy Coating?

Concrete floors, by their very nature, are porous and susceptible to staining, cracking, and chipping. Over time, exposure to moisture, chemicals, and heavy traffic can take a significant toll on an unprotected concrete surface. Epoxy coatings provide a superior solution by creating a seamless, high-strength barrier that protects the concrete from these damaging elements. The exceptional bonding properties of epoxy ensure a long-lasting, durable finish that becomes virtually one with the concrete itself. This not only safeguards the integrity of the floor but also enhances its aesthetic appeal. With a wide variety of colors and decorative options available, epoxy coatings can transform a drab concrete surface into a stunning and functional element of your garage or commercial business.

How Do You Prepare for Epoxy Coatings?

The first step in preparing for epoxy coating application is to remove any equipment or other items in the area. Once everything has been moved out of the way, we power wash to remove any grease, grime, dirt, and debris. If the surface has existing paint, this will need to be removed as well – we use shot blasting and grinders to remove all traces of the original paint in order to ensure that the epoxy performs correctly.

Epoxy Coating vs Epoxy Painting

While the terms are often used interchangeably, it’s important to clarify the difference between epoxy coatings and paint. Traditional paint creates a superficial layer on the surface, whereas epoxy is a resin system that bonds deeply with the concrete. This creates a much tougher, more durable, and chemical-resistant finish.

In simpler terms, think of traditional paint as a coat of armour laid on top of the concrete, while an epoxy coating is more like a complete suit of armour that becomes integrated with the concrete itself.

What Is the Timeline for Epoxy Coatings?

It can take several days for epoxy to cure completely to the point that it can support more than minimal foot traffic. We tailor our schedule to match your needs in an effort to minimise disruptions. We may even discuss flexible scheduling options such as work at night or on the weekends to suit your needs. We’ll also advise you on when the floor can support traffic without sustaining damage that might compromise the epoxy.

While your garage will be usable much sooner, achieving a complete cure for your epoxy floor coating is an important step for ensuring maximum durability. Cure times can vary depending on factors like temperature and the thickness of the epoxy applied. In general, you can expect light foot traffic to be possible within 24 hours, with full cure achieved in 3-7 days. However, it’s always best to consult the specific recommendations of the epoxy product used and to err on the side of caution by limiting heavy use or exposure to chemicals for a full week after installation. Our team at Elite Trade Painting Edmonton will provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure your beautiful new epoxy floor lasts for years to come.
