Brick and Masonry: Painting and Staining for Edmonton Homes and Businesses

Brick and masonry (concrete) have long been used in the building of homes and commercial properties. These materials are incredibly durable, capable of lasting for decades. However, they are not impervious to exposure to the elements, nor are they immune to the way that tastes and trends change. Brick and masonry painting and staining in Edmonton can help add beauty and a unique aesthetic to your home or business.

Can Brick and Masonry Be Painted?

Yes, brick and masonry painting and staining has been performed for a long time. Of course, the right products are necessary to ensure a quality job and that the results last. We prefer to use Dulux Weathergard, Dulux Diamond, or Sherwin Williams A-100 or Resilience for all brick and masonry painting. We’ve found that these products are the most cost effective, and have the longest lifespan.

For staining, we prefer to use Dulux Perma Crete, as well as Permatint. These products are available in a range of shades, and both are solid stains with a built-in primer for ease of application.

How Does Brick and Masonry Painting and Staining Work?

In almost all instances, the first step in painting or staining your brick or masonry exterior will be to power wash it. This is necessary to remove dirt, dust, pollen, and mould that would otherwise affect the paint or stain.

Once the exterior has been cleaned and has dried, we get to work applying the paint or stain. With painting, we will usually apply two coats and we will use rollers, sprayers, and brushes. However, note that some colours will require more than two coats in order to ensure an optimum outcome.

With stain, we apply two coats, and because the products we use include a primer, there is no need to prime the surface first. Note that many stain products have a thin viscosity, which means we will need to take precautions to avoid it coming into contact with other surfaces.

We’re also happy to offer full coverage or individual brick and masonry coverage to suit your needs and tastes.

Benefits of Exterior Brick Painting

  • Increased Curb Appeal: A fresh coat of paint can dramatically improve the look of your brick home, making it look newer and more attractive.
  • Protection from the Elements: Paint helps to protect your brick from the harmful effects of UV rays, rain, and snow. This can help to extend the life of your brick and prevent costly repairs down the road.
  • Improved Energy Efficiency: Painting your brick exterior can help to improve the energy efficiency of your home. Lighter colors reflect sunlight, which can help to keep your home cooler in the summer.
  • Reduced Maintenance: Painted brick is easier to maintain than unpainted brick. Dirt and grime will not adhere to the paint as easily, making it easier to keep your home looking clean.

What Colours Are Offered?

We are proud to offer a very wide range of colours for your home or business. Note that colour selection will have an impact on the number of coats needed for full coverage, and that will affect total cost.

Brick Painting vs Staining

When it comes to refreshing your brick home’s exterior look, you have two main options: paint or stain. Both offer aesthetic improvements, but they cater to different preferences and needs.

Paint provides a complete colour change, offering a wider range of colours from classic white to modern black and everything in between. It creates a more uniform look, ideal for concealing imperfections or dramatically altering your home’s style. However, paint forms a barrier on the brick’s surface, which can trap moisture within the brick, potentially causing future problems if not applied correctly.

Stain, on the other hand, enhances the natural beauty of your brick while adding a subtle colour shift. It allows the brick to breathe, promoting better moisture management and helping to prevent future cracking or spalling. Stains are also generally more durable and require less frequent maintenance compared to paint. They are less likely to crack, peel, or fade over time, meaning you can enjoy your refreshed exterior for longer. However, the colour options for stains are more limited, typically earthy tones that complement the natural look of brick. Additionally, they won’t completely hide imperfections like paint can. Stains are better suited for brick in good condition where the goal is to enhance rather than overhaul the appearance.

Ultimately, the best choice depends on your desired outcome. If you prioritise a dramatic transformation and a wider colour palette to completely change the look and feel of your home, paint might be the way to go. If you value preserving the natural texture of your brick and long-lasting results with lower maintenance requirements, stain could be the better option.
